Since her death in 1962 at the age of 36, Marilyn Monroe has been held up as the epitome of natural beauty and unadulterated sex appeal. But last week, some of her au natural charms were instead revealed to be the result of cosmetic surgery.

Southern California-based plastic surgeon Norman Leaf came forward as the seller of six X-rays and a file of doctor’s notes that suggest the “Some Like it Hot” star underwent an array of procedures between 1950 and 1962, including a chin implant made of carved bovine cartilage and some work on the tip of her nose.

Many Hollywood types weren’t surprised.

“There is no such thing as natural beauty when it comes to Hollywood,” body image expert Sarah Maria, author of ‘Love Your Body, Love Your Life,’ told FOX411. “(The industry) is interested in glamour and instant appeal – this means that anything natural will be ‘perfected’ to fit in with a Hollywood ideal.”

Dr. Gabriel Chiu of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc. said the fact that Monroe hid her surgeries was a sign of the times, times that have since changed.

“If this information came out 30 years ago, it would be a much bigger, more shocking issue than it is now,” he said.

But publicist and image expert Ronn Torossian, CEO of 5WPR, says Monroe’s surgeries should no impact on her legacy.

“Marilyn’s status as the quintessential symbol of American beauty will never be changed. So many years after her death she is still written about, spoken about and fantasized about,” he explained. “From her picture at the entrance to the city of Cannes to the timeless video of her singing Happy Birthday to John F. Kennedy, there is really nothing which can change the legend of Marilyn Monroe.”

The medical notes were written by surgeon Michael Gurdin, who began a practice in Beverly Hills with Leaf in 1975.

The files will be sold to the highest bidder by prominent auction house Julien’s Auctions in November, and are expected to go for up to $30,000 dollars. Leaf said all proceeds will go to the nonprofit organization Rebuilding America’s Warriors, which assists veterans in receiving free-of-charge reconstructive surgery on injuries not accounted for by government benefits.

“It’s a perfect link because Marilyn entertained the troops in Korea,” Leaf told Reuters. “So this is a chance for her to help the troops out again.”

Dr, Chiu is still less than impressed. “Not only is it disrespectful to disclose medical records, but illegal to do so even if that person is deceased,” he said. “But Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) privacy rules have recently been amended to limit the applicability of its privacy rule to 50 years after a person’s death. Marilyn died 51 years ago.”

She continued: "He had more than two, he was just embarrassed. I hear that people get addicted to plastic surgery, and I think that's what happened to him. I said, that's enough."

Later Katherine was joined in interview by Michael's father, Joe, whom she pushed to admit that he had beat Michael and their other nine children as they grew up.

When Oprah asked Joe about how he punished his children, he started to deny it, before Katherine interjected, saying: “You might as well admit it, that's the way black people raised their children. He used a strap."

Joe defended himself, however, adding: “I don't regret the beatings. It kept them out of jail and kept them right."

Katherine also talked about Michael's struggle with prescription drugs, and how she felt when she heard the news of his death on June 25 last year, from acute Propofol intoxication, for which his person physician Dr Conrad Murray faces charges of involuntary manslaughter.

She said: "I spoke to Michael about drugs once, when I had heard it and he denied it. I was telling him I didn't want to one day hear that he had overdosed because it would break my heart."

“He kept saying, 'My own mother don't believe me. Part of me wanted to believe him, but I didn't believe him."

Of Michael's passing she said: "It was the worst day of my life. My heart dropped. I kind of felt it, but I was wishing that it wouldn't be.

If a statuesque woman is totally flat-chested and wants to have large breasts, one could go from an A to a D, but I would not advise doing anything that ruins the natural proportion of a woman’s body and begins to look fake.”

“I always prefer to use the transaxillary, sub-pectoral approach, meaning that I insert the implant through a tiny incision in the armpit and position the implant under the muscle. This technique leaves no visible scars anywhere near the breast, and it does not interfere with future breast feeding. In addition, the recovery is very quick:  if a woman has the procedure on a Friday, she can be back to work by Monday, so long as her job does not entail great physical exertion.”

There are two types of implants, Dr. Weintraub explains: “There are saline and silicone implants. Silicone behaves more naturally, and comes in different styles to suit the individual patient.”

Dr. William Bruno, Board Certified Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon, agrees that she has had work done and tells HollywoodLife.com:

“In the most recent photo, her volume appears larger. The roundness of the cleavage as well also suggests a breast augmentation.”

“Most patients can increase their bra size by one to two cup sizes, depending on the elasticity of their skin.”

The cost of implants vary between doctors and areas of the country, but our experts say that saline implants cost between $4,500 to $6,000 and silicone ranges from $6,500 to $10,000.”

“Most patients choose silicone due to it’s more natural feel. You must be 22 years old to be eligible for silicone in the United States.”

Naya May Have Increased 2 Cup Sizes — Expert

NYC-based Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Matthew Schulman tells us EXCLUSIVELY that the defined cleavage and roundness of her breasts suggest implants.

“Early photos of Naya show breasts that are likely a very small B. Subsequent photos appear to show that she has had breast augmentation. The well defined cleavage and roundness is suggestive of breast implants. She appears to have increased to a small C in 2013 and may have even had them enlarged again to a very large C or small D cup.”

Dr. Schulman says the procedure takes about 90 minutes to perform. Downtime is only 2 days but he recommends waiting about 3 weeks before any vigorous exercise.
Are There Risks Associated With Breast Implants?

David Cangello, M.D., Director Of Plastic Surgery at JUVA Skin, Laser and Plastic Surgery Center also weighs in on the risks and rewards of a breast augmentation:

“Looking at those 2 photos, it certainly does appear that she has had breast implants. Her breasts are much larger in the “After” picture and she has that roundness to the middle aspect of her breasts that is characteristic of the shape of breast implants.

It is difficult to say whether they look natural because they are being pushed up somewhat by her bathing suit top. Assessment of whether breast implants look natural is best done when the patient is not wearing garments.


The risks in going “too big” are related to how much the breast tissue is stretched by having a large implant placed underneath it. The most common problem associated with having implants that are too large is that overtime the breast skin stretches because of the weight of the implant and ultimately a secondary procedure (breast lift) is needed.”
